The milk arrives powdered from Nepal. Our team in NSW curdles it with citrus, which drains the whey away along with most of the lactose and the fat. What is left is formed, twisted by hand and air-dried for weeks until it is rock solid.

When it is down to a nub, do not bin it. Soak it in water for five minutes, microwave it on high for 45 to 60 seconds, and it puffs into a crunchy ball.

Questions people actually ask
Will it damage teeth?
Yak chews are hard, and that is the point. Pick a size bigger than your dog's open mouth, supervise, and keep the first week to five or ten minute sessions. The twist gives them an edge to shave at rather than a block to bite down on. Not for dogs with existing dental problems.
How long does it last?
Days rather than minutes for most dogs. A Large will usually give a 30 kg dog several sessions across a week, and a Medium does the same for a 15 kg dog. Determined chewers get through one faster.
My dog is dairy-sensitive.
Most of the lactose drains away with the whey during curdling, which is why these suit a lot of dogs that cannot handle dairy otherwise. Introduce it over a few days. If your dog is on a veterinary diet, check with your vet first.
When should I take it away?
At about 4 to 5 cm. Below that it is small enough to swallow whole. Swap it for a treat, then soak and microwave the nub into a puffed ball, or bin it.
My dog is under 10 kg.
Medium, in short sessions. A yak chew is dense, so one chew goes a long way on a small dog's calorie budget. A smaller size is on the list.
Puppies?
Not until the adult teeth are fully in, usually around six months, and then only under supervision in short sessions. Puppy teeth are too soft for a chew this hard.
Does it smell?
Barely. That is one of the main reasons people move across from bully sticks. No grease on the couch and no shreds through the carpet.
Where is it made?
Made in NSW. The milk comes from yaks grazed above the tree line in Nepal and is powdered close to the source to hold the freshness. Our team here curdles it, twists it by hand and air-dries it for weeks.
