Collagen chews

Half the chew aisleis a byproduct of the leather industry.

The other half splinters, or is hard enough to break a tooth. A collagen chew is neither, and here are the five reasons it’s the one you’ve been looking for.

Five reasons

What actually makes it different.

Most long-lasting chews solve one problem and create another. Here is what is in ours, what is not, and why it still lasts.

  1. Liquid collagen being poured into a mould

One ingredient, and the name says it

Plain Beef is beef collagen. That is the entire list. No glycerine, no starch, no sugar, no salt, no preservatives, no binders, and nothing added for taste.

Turn over most chews in the supermarket aisle and you will find at least four of those on the back.

    One ingredient. Nothing added.

  2. Three Bolta collagen chew sticks, beef liver, chicken and parsley, and plain beef

Almost all protein, almost no fat

96% protein and 0.4% fat, lab tested by Agrifood. A bully stick is around 80% protein. A yak chew is closer to 54%, at about 19% fat. A dental stick is roughly 14%.

That matters if your dog is on a weight watch, because most long-lasting chews are far richer than they look.

    96% protein / 0.4% fat / lab tested

  3. Close up of the chew, softened at one end

    It softens instead of splintering

Saliva breaks collagen down as they chew, so it gets softer rather than sharper. Nothing cracks off, nothing has an edge to it.

That is the opposite of an antler or a bone, where the risk is a fractured tooth, and the opposite of rawhide, which swells once it is swallowed.

Low splinter risk, not a by-product of leather

  4. Set blocks on a drying rack

Made by hand, here, in small runs

Human-grade collagen, made in NSW by the people who actually make it, in runs small enough that we know what came off the rack each week.

A lot of what sits on the shelf here was made overseas and shipped in, which is the real reason so many chews need something added to them.

  5. A dog with a finished Bolta chew stick

    And it actually lasts

Slow dried until firm, so your dog has to work at it. A bully stick is gone in minutes and a dental stick in under one.

A Large gives a 30 kg dog several sessions across a few days. That is the difference between buying a chew and buying twenty minutes.

Large, 180 g, for dogs over 25 kg

Give them the one with nothing in it.

Plain Beef is the one to start with. One ingredient, two sizes, made in NSW.

Before you buy

Questions peopleactually ask.

What actually is a collagen chew?

The collagen-rich layer of the hide, slow dried until it's firm. It isn't rawhide, which is chemically treated and swells in the stomach. Ours is human-grade and 96% protein, and it softens as your dog works at it rather than snapping into shards.

Which size does my dog need?

Two sizes. Medium suits dogs up to about 25 kg, Large anything over. If your dog is near the line, or chews hard, size up. A chew that is too big is safer than one that gets small enough to swallow whole.

How long does one actually last?

It depends on the dog. A Large usually gives a 30 kg dog several sessions across a few days, roughly twenty minutes at a time. A determined chewer will get through it faster, a gentle one will stretch it out.

Is it safe for a heavy chewer?

Yes, and the size matters more than the flavour. Go Large for anything over 25 kg. Supervise the session and take it away once it's small enough to swallow whole.

Are they suitable for puppies?

Once the adult teeth are through, usually around six months. Start with a Medium and keep the sessions short.

Which flavour should I start with?

Plain Beef. One ingredient, and most dogs take to it straight away. Beef Liver smells considerably stronger, which is the one for a dog that needs convincing. Chicken and Parsley is the lighter of the three.

Who makes them?

A small maker on the NSW south coast makes the collagen chews by hand, in small batches. They have been making this chew longer than anyone else in the country.
